More information about this location

The photo post in Anagach woods is on an area that was formerly a Victorian dump!

The name Anagach may be derived from the Gaelic “Aonach” which means hillocky, which is very apt given the striking landforms within the woodland created by eskers and moraines, large deposits of sand and gravel left behind by glaciers after the last ice age.

Anagach woods is designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA) for its resident population of capercaillie.  SPA’s are protected at a European level, which makes Anagach internationally important for nature conservation. Capercaillie are the world’s largest grouse and are an iconic species of boreal pine forest. They are extremely shy however and you’d be very lucky to see one, despite being the size of a turkey.

Anagach woods is a community woodland and has been owned and managed by the Anagach Woodland Trust since 2002. To find out more visit their website.
