Shortlist announced for Cairngorms National Park Design Awards 201

The Judges have whittled down the entries in the first ever Cairngorms National Park Design Awards to a shortlist of 20. The winners will be announced at a special evening event in Boat of Garten community hall on Thursday 29 November 2012.

Shortlisted entries are:

  • Ardgeal Housing, near Kincraig
  • Aundorach Steading, Tulloch
  • Aviemore Primary School
  • Bellabeg House, Strathdon
  • Burn o Vat view point
  • Cairngorm Brewery, Aviemore
  • Cheesemaking Dairy, Dinnet
  • Creagan Gorm Cottages, Glenmore
  • Croft of Clachaig, near Nethy Bridge
  • Easter Tombain, near Grantown on Spey
  • Fae Bothy, Dorback Estate
  • Glen Doll Ranger Base
  • Habitat, Ballater
  • Inshdryne Lodge, Tulloch
  • Mackintosh House, Duthill
  • Pond at 10 Station Cottages, Kingussie
  • Stranruie Steading, Tulloch
  • The Dipper, near Grantown on Spey
  • The Lookout, Insh Marshes
  • Woodman’s Hut, Lazy Duck Hostel

The judging panel was chaired by architect, Roddy Langmuir and he was joined by architect Ben Tindall. Also on the panel were Roger Clegg, Chairman of the Association of Cairngorms Communities (AoCC) as well as CNPA board convener Duncan Bryden and fellow board member, Peter Argyle.

Each of the 56 entries was considered against a number of criteria and in all cases had to reflect the principles of good design set out in the Cairngorms National Park Sustainable Design Guide. The criteria include:

  • use of locally available / sourced materials
  • use of local people in the design and construction of the development
  • how environmentally friendly it is
  • how it contributes to the special place that is the Cairngorms National Park
  • how it relates to what is around it, whether that be other buildings, or the wider landscape its relationship with its surroundings
  • how well it makes use of  existing materials on the site, or reuses materials from elsewhere maintaining or re-use of resources
  • creativity and innovation – not an off the shelf solution, but one which makes the most of its individual location
  • affordability

The winners will be revealed on the night at the event in Boat of Garten, with others being commended for their designs.
