More information on this location
Strathdon was originally called Invernochty due to its location at the confluence of the River Don and the River Nochty. It is the founding place of the Lonach Highland Gathering which takes place every year on the fourth Saturday in August.
The Doune of Invernochty (the prominent mound across the River) comprises a motte and earthworks dating from the late 12th/early 13th century. It ranks as one of the finest examples of Norman earthwork castles in Scotland.
There’s been a church of Strathdon since 1200; the present one was built in the mid nineteenth century. Its size suggests a settlement once much larger than the one present today. The kirkyard contains a red granite ashlar Egyptian mausoleum of two storeys built for Mary Forbes and thought to be designed by the Aberdeen architect Archibald Simpson.
