More information on this location
The River Dee has the highest source of any major river in Britain, rising from the plateau of Braeriach. The name “Dee” is thought to derive from an ancient Pictish word which means “goddess”, indicating the high status of the river in the beliefs of ancient inhabitants of the area.
Mar Lodge can be made out in the distance and is the base of the Mar Lodge estate, owned and run by the National Trust for Scotland. One of the largest estates in the Cairngorms National Park, it has large tracts of Caledonian pinewood and includes several of the Park’s highest peaks.
