More information about this location
Much of the landscape you look across from this viewpoint is one estate, the Glenlivet Estate. It is steeped in history with the Battle of Glenlivet, illicit whisky distilling and the secret catholic Seminary at Scalan adding interest to the landscape. For more information on the local heritage and things to do, visit the Glenlivet Estate website.
Tomintoul is a planned settlement laid out in 1777 by the 4th Duke of Gordon. He placed it strategically beside the military road that had been built c1755 to cross the Lecht. The Duke intended that his new village would enable agricultural and economic progress on his Glenlivet estate and restrict opportunities for the illicit cattle and whisky trade!
If you are interested in the social and natural history of the area check out the Tomintoul Museum and Visitor Centre.
