More information about this location
The Roche Moutonnée and glacier scoured rocks are great to wander around and wonder at. Roche Moutonnée literally means “rock wigs” – in 1787 the alpine explorer H.B. de Saussure thought these groups of rounded whale-back rocks resembled the wavy wigs or “moutonées” that men wore at that time, which were slicked down with mutton tallow to keep them in place!
Roche Moutonnées occur widely in the Cairngorms and vary greatly in size, from a few meters in height like those here in Dulnain Bridge to Ord Bàn near Aviemore which is 400m high.
