The Cairngorms National Park Forest Strategy 2018 provides strategic direction for managing existing, and designing new, native woodlands and commercial forests in the Cairngorms National Park.

It gives context about existing woodland and forestry in the National Park and helps to ensure that future native woodland creation or commercial forestry activity is directed to where it matters most.

It also outlines how to integrate woodlands and forestry with other important habitats and activities such as the management of farms, moorland, wetland and recreational resources.

Specifically, the forest strategy:

  • Helps to deliver woodland and forest related elements of the Cairngorms National Park Partnership Plan.
  • Encourages new woodland and forestry creation that complements other land uses and the landscapes of the Cairngorms National Park.
  • Identifies key issues and opportunities affecting forests, woodlands and trees in the Cairngorms National Park and provides accompanying policy guidance.
  • Assists in the appraisal of funding applications for woodland and forestry creation.
  • Promotes awareness of the value of encouraging more woodland creation in the Cairngorms National Park and encourages greater collaboration between agencies, the forestry industry, landowners, land managers and communities.
  • Timber transport lorry picking up harvested pines, Abernethy Forest, Cairngorms National Park, Scotland, UK
  • Mixed habitat of heather moorland and commercial forestry on grouse shooting estate
