Paper 2 — Guidance for Organised Outdoor Access Events Prepared by: Vicky Hilton, Outdoor Access Officer
Purpose LOAF members are asked to review the draft document “Guidance for organised outdoor access events” in Appendix 1 and provide any feedback or comments.
LOAF members are also asked to consider if water-based events should be included and what would constitute a small, medium and large scale event.
Background The Cairngorms National Park is a popular destination for organised outdoor access events such as sponsored walks, competitive cycle races and adventure challenges. Such events can be beneficial and encourage participation in recreation, support the enjoyment and discovery of the National Park and bring economic benefits to communities. However, there is a need to ensure that events are run sustainably and don’t cause negative impacts on the natural and cultural heritage of the Park or the people that live and work here.
The events guide is primarily aimed at organisers of outdoor access events but also provides guidance and clarity for land managers about hosting events on their land and when their permission is required to run an event.
The guidance document is an update of a previous event guide and is based on the National Access Forum’s event guidance, customised and expanded for the Cairngorms National Park.
