Cultural Heritage Network - September 2024

13 September 2024

An objective of the National Park Partnership Plan is to safeguard and promote the National Park’s cultural heritage and provide opportunities for everyone to experience and learn about the National Park’s outstanding historic environment, history and culture. In support of this objective the Cairngorms National Park Authority commissioned Scottish Community Tourism Network (SCOTO) in December 2023 to investigate the establishment of a Cultural Heritage Network that brings people together and adds value to those most closely involved in cultural heritage across the National Park. This piece of work was designed to inform the next steps.

This document contains a report by Scottish Community Tourism Network (SCOTO) from May 2024, which explores the potential of establishing a Cultural Heritage Network for the Cairngorms National Park. In December 2023, the Cairngorms National Park Authority appointed SCOTO to undertake preparatory work to explore the potential for establishing a Cultural Heritage Network. SCOTO conducted an online survey and qualitative interviews to gather information, which resulted in the finding that an annual Park-wide face to face conference would be the best next step. The survey and conversations highlighted the great level of interest in a network, so the report also recommends that funding be allocated towards it. The report looks at case studies, examining three strategic cultural heritage initiatives within the Cairngorms National Park, and also cultural heritage networks from elsewhere in the UK and Scotland.
