Eval­u­ation inform­a­tion sheet

You are being invited to help eval­u­ate the design phase of the Cairngorms 2030 Com­munit­ies Fund. Chris Mack­ie is lead­ing this eval­u­ation as part of Cairngorms 2030. Before you decide if you want to take part, it is import­ant you under­stand why the eval­u­ation is hap­pen­ing and what it will involve. Please read the fol­low­ing inform­a­tion carefully.

What are the pur­poses of the evaluation?

• Identi­fy suc­cesses and chal­lenges of the design phase.
• Tell the stor­ies of the design phase so that learn­ing from the pro­cess can inform fur­ther work in the Cairngorms Nation­al Park and beyond.
• Provide a range of ways for pan­el mem­bers to share their experiences.

Why have I been invited to take part?

You have been invited to take part because you con­trib­uted to the design of the fund as a pan­el member.

Do I need to take part?

No, tak­ing part is vol­un­tary. If you wish to with­draw, you can do so at any time without provid­ing a reas­on. If you with­draw before pub­lic­a­tion of any find­ings, we will give you the oppor­tun­ity to have any data already col­lec­ted des­troyed. If you start some­thing, but don’t fin­ish it, we’ll trust you to tell us how much time you put towards it. Pay­ment for par­ti­cip­a­tion will be made at the end of the process.

What will I be asked to do?

You will be work­ing with someone who has not been involved in the deliv­ery of the design work­shops. There are three ways you can share your experiences:

1. Anonym­ous interviews

• No longer than one hour, online or in-person.
• Answer open ques­tions about the design phase.
• Inter­views will be recor­ded and tran­scribed so that themes can be identified.
• Quotes may be used, but anonymised unless you say otherwise.
• One hour remu­ner­a­tion + expenses

2. Nar­rat­ive writing

• Watch a short intro video online and com­plete a couple of plan­ning activities.
• Pro­duce a short piece of writ­ing (1−2 pages) which tells your story of the design phase.
• Could tell the story of the whole pro­cess, or a story which provides insights into one part of the experience.
• Edit­ing and writ­ing sup­port available.
• Can be anonym­ous or not.
• Four hours remuneration.
• If it takes longer, you want to do more or also write some­thing else, you won’t receive extra remu­ner­a­tion, but we think this amount of time should be enough to meet our needs.

3. Nar­rat­ive interviews

• Inter­view­er works with you to identi­fy a story from your experience.
• Inter­view about one hour, online or in-per­son, audio recorded.
• Inter­view­er writes up a draft story from your interview.
• You read and com­ment on draft and agree a final version.
• Two and a half hours remu­ner­a­tion + expenses
• If it takes longer or you want to do more, you won’t receive extra remu­ner­a­tion, but we think this amount of time should be enough to meet our needs.

You could choose any one of the options or do an anonym­ous inter­view and one of the nar­rat­ive options. Inter­views can be con­duc­ted at a time con­veni­ent to you, includ­ing in the evening.

What will hap­pen to the inform­a­tion collected?

Quotes, themes and insights from all three meth­ods will be used to inform a sum­mary report on the design phase of the Cairngorms 2030 Com­munit­ies Fund. This may be shared in full or in part, with fun­ders, part­ners, on our web­site or pub­lished in aca­dem­ic art­icles. The col­lec­ted stor­ies from the nar­rat­ive meth­ods may be pub­lished in full as a sup­port­ing document.

What are the poten­tial risks?

You don’t have to take part in any of the eval­u­ation activ­it­ies. There are no obvi­ous risks asso­ci­ated with tak­ing part. It should always be clear wheth­er your con­tri­bu­tions are offered anonym­ously or not, and only the eval­u­ation team will see non-anonymised data.

What are the poten­tial benefits?

You will be paid for your par­ti­cip­a­tion based on an estim­ate of how long each task could take. By tak­ing part, you will ensure that your exper­i­ence of the pro­cess is heard, which will help us to work out how suc­cess­ful the design phase has been and inform sim­il­ar ini­ti­at­ives in the future or in dif­fer­ent places.
