This document contains a Habitats Regulations Appraisal for a proposed forestry track construction and upgrade project located north of Newtonmore. This project, which involves building new bridges and culverts, was assessed for its potential effects on the River Spey Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and its protected species like otters, freshwater pearl mussels, sea lampreys, and Atlantic salmon. The appraisal found that while there are potential impacts, such as disturbing otters, releasing sediment, and pollution affecting water quality and habitats, these risks can be managed. It concludes that if specific mitigation measures are implemented – including timing work to avoid Atlantic salmon spawning, following a robust pollution prevention plan, and conducting pre-construction otter surveys with protection plans if needed – there will be no adverse effect on the integrity of the River Spey SAC, ensuring its conservation objectives are met.
