Title: UPDATE ON ABERDEENSHIRE ARCHITECTURAL AND LANDSCAPE DESIGN AWARDS 2020 Prepared by: Gavin Miles, Head of Planning and Communities
Purpose To update the Planning Committee on the recently completed Aberdeenshire Architectural and Landscape Design Awards 2020, and category winners located in the Cairngorms National Park.
Recommendation That the Committee:
i. Note the award winners, commended entries and shortlists containing good examples of design within the Cairngorms National Park.
Background
- The CNPA has run design awards competitions twice since it the National Park was established and will run a further competition in 2022. Aberdeenshire Council, where there is significantly more development during any year than within the Cairngorms National Park, run a successful biennial design awards competition. The 2020 Aberdeenshire Architectural and Landscape Design Awards, were completed entirely online and the results announced on 31 March 2021. There were many entries from developments within the Cairngorms National Park and a number of winning and commended entries that help showcase good design. The awards included other categories and winners from other locations within Aberdeenshire and we recommend members view the full range of entries and winners for interest.
Summary of winning entries within the Cairngorms National Park
- The Aberdeenshire Awards have an easy to use website so the lists below summarise the winning entries from the Cairngorms National Park under each relevant category of the awards, with a link to each entry on the website. The awards were announced on and were introduced by Councillor Bill Howatson, Provost of Aberdeenshire and

Conclusion
- The 2020 Aberdeenshire Awards were clearly a success, with many worthy winners from across Aberdeenshire. However, the Cairngorms National Park was well represented in the entries, and a range of good quality development is showcased, including the Fife Arms Hotel and Ballater Station projects that were approved by the CNPA Planning Committee. We all look forward to some of these and other projects from across the National Park, being entered into the CNPA’s next Design Awards in 2022.
