Approvals for flood defences and wildlife ponds

The Cairngorms National Park Authority Planning Committee met today, Friday 13 March, to consider a number ofapplications across the National Park area.

The Committee approved an application to form a flood defence bund and flood relief channel between housing at Truim View and the River Truim, Dalwhinnie. The project is led by the community’s flood resilience group to protect properties in the area, and the Committee was unanimous in approving the application and congratulated the community on their efforts.

Members also approved an application for planning permission to create ten wildlife ponds in Ballater. The proposal forms part of a wider project to establish a network of more than 100 ponds for the rare northern damselfly across the National Park, extending from Braemar to Aboyne along the River Dee corridor.

A Proposal of Application Notice was presented for the development of 108 houses, eight residential plots and associated infrastructure at Kingussie. The proposal will now proceed to a formal planning application, which is expected to come before the Park Authority’s Planning Committee later this year.

A consultation from the Scottish Government’s Energy Consents Unit on an application relating to the extension of the Dornell Wind Farm just outside the National Park boundary, approximately 10 km south of Dufftown, was also on the agenda. The proposal sought consent for 67 wind turbines, along with associated infrastructure. The Committee objected to the application on the basis that the scale, size and location of this proposal would result in significant adverse effects on the Special Landscape Qualities of the Cairngorms National Park.

The Committee advised that the proposal does not meet Policy 4c of National Planning Framework 4 (NPF4) due to extensive adverse effects on the Glenbuchat and the Braes of Glenlivet areas within the National Park.

All reports and papers relating to Planning Committee meetings are available on the dedicated Planning Committee page of the Cairngorms National Park Authority website.
