Summary After purchasing six acres of woodland close to Carrbridge, we submitted a Woodland Management Plan to Scottish Forestry that has subsequently been approved (Reference Number: FPA-6699). Our Woodland Management Plan was developed based on consultation with the Cairngorm National Park Authority, the Woodland Trust, Trees for Life and the RSPB.

We are now preparing to implement its objectives which include the thinning of densely planted trees and the planting of over 800 trees with stakes and tubes.

In order to carry out these works, we would require a forestry building to provide: • secure storage for tools and equipment. • a shelter during our autumn/winter work period. • a covered area to undertake the potting and rearing of Scots pine saplings. As the woodland is sited within a seed exclusion zone, we will grow our own Scots pine saplings from seed.

Key Objectives and Considerations As outlined in the Woodland Management Plan, our long term vision for the woodland is to improve it as a habitat for wildlife. We intend to do this by selectively thinning trees in areas where they have outgrown their current stocking density and planting a variety of native trees throughout the wood. Thinning will allow existing trees to mature fully and will permit more light to reach the ground, encouraging the understory and promoting tree regeneration. By planting and protecting young indigenous trees, a more structurally and species diverse woodland will develop, thereby increasing shelter and food sources for wildlife.

As the woodland is located close to a local capercaille population, our Woodland Management Plan would be implemented within RSPB guidelines. Any potentially disruptive forestry works (e.g. felling) would be undertaken outwith sensitive lekking and breeding times (March 15th to May 15th exclusively and with caution from then until August). This will not only avoid disruption to the capercaille but will also ensure that tree felling and planting happens at an appropriate time during the trees’ dormant season.

Design • The forestry building will be made from natural, locally sourced materials with internal dimensions of 3m x 6m. • The timber frame will be made with logs from woodland thinning. • The footings will be made with boulders from the plot, raising the structure off the ground. • The walls will be clad in timber to blend into its woodland surroundings. • The roof will be made from corrugated metal. • The windows will be positioned to take advantage of natural light entering the building. • A covered decking will provide a sheltered outdoor work space and an area for dry storage. • Due to the building’s lightweight design and use of natural materials it will be easily removed without trace at the end of its life.

Siting The forestry building will be sited in a natural clearing close to the centre of the woodland (see site plan pages 6 – 7). This will give it the appearance of being nestled into the landscape and will be less visible from the track, providing additional security. This central location will optimise access to all areas of the plot allowing forestry operations to be undertaken efficiently.
