Glenmore and Strath Nethy wildfire update, 29 July at 7:45pm
Firefighting continues in Glenmore and Abernethy and though we’re seeing some positive progress in some areas, there are still multiple hotspots.
Though we have had some rain this afternoon, when fire is burning beneath the surface it takes considerable and sustained efforts to cool it. This requires work on the ground in addition to helicopter waterbombing operations and so fire fighters, RSPB Scotland, partners, gamekeepers and other volunteers remain on the scene. Additionally, work is being undertaken by Forestry and Land Scotland to remove fallen trees and debris, to make the area safe again. Our heartfelt thanks again go to all of those working so hard on this operation.
The impacts of the wildfire are far reaching. Critically, there is a deeply human impact to this incident, in addition to the impact on our beloved forests, mountains and wildlife. From the people who have been grafting on the front line, to the businesses, employees and residents directly affected.
Today Highland Council brought together Community Council leaders, the Cairngorms Business Partnership and partners to discuss the challenges being faced by businesses, and the need for urgent support. The Park Authority’s CEO Grant Moir and Convener Sandy Bremner, took part in this meeting. These conversations are vital, and will continue.
Whilst this situation is concerning and ongoing, we must ensure the public is aware that the vast majority of the National Park is not affected by the wildfire. Visitors can expect a friendly welcome, and we know that people will be keen to return to this special place, and show their support for the local community.
Road closures and cordons will remain in place while operations are ongoing. This is being reviewed daily by the incident command team and partners. We will share updates on this as soon as we hear more. Tonight, a police cordon remains in place in Glenmore (the C7 ski road) and on two roads near Nethy Bridge – Dorback and Lettoch.

There is an ongoing wildfire situation at Glenmore within the Cairngorms National Park. Click here for all the latest. We would encourage members of the public to follow current guidance and be aware that the situation may change.
Due to the this wildfire incident, the following paths and routes are closed:
- All the paths around Loch Morlich, Glenmore and Badaguish are closed.
- The Ryvoan pass is closed, this includes all access to the Green Lochan (Lochan Uaine).
- Routes providing access to Cairngorm, the Northern Corries, Meall a’ Bhuachaille, Strath Nethy and Bynack More should be avoided.
- The Abernethy Forest area to the south of Forest Lodge and towards Ryvoan bothy is closed.
