Glenmore fire update - 18 July at 3.30pm

There are positive signs that the wildfire at Glenmore is being brought under control, thanks to the extraordinary efforts of firefighters, NGO partners, gamekeepers, estate workers, contractors and farmers over the past four days.

Crews have been at the scene since first light today, making the most of more favourable weather conditions including low cloud and reduced temperatures.

Helicopters are water bombing Glenmore woodland this afternoon, while trees have been felled and firebreaks created.

Thermal drone images taken by Park Authority staff this morning show the gravity of the fire, but the full extent of the damage is not yet known.

Gavin Miles, Director of Planning and Place at the Park Authority, said: “Glenmore and Strath Nethy are much-loved areas of the National Park and many people will be deeply saddened to see the impact as photographs and footage emerge from the scene.

“This is still a live situation and the operation is far from over. However, we are heartened by news from crews on the ground that their major efforts – and some welcome rain – are making a difference. It is still very early, but we are cautiously hopeful.

“I want to reiterate our gratitude for all those involved - from Scottish Fire and Rescue Service leading the operation on the ground to staff from RSPB, FLS, Cairngorm Mountain and the many gamekeepers, estate workers, farmers and volunteers who have offered their time and expertise in very challenging conditions. We are also grateful to the wider community for their support and understanding.”

Cordons are still in place and the advice remains for people to avoid Glenmore, Abernethy, Loch Morlich and surrounding areas as the efforts to manage and fully extinguish the fires continue.

We will continue to post updates on our website, Facebook and Instagram as the situation develops.
