Community managed climate grants

Dulnain Bridge with fields in the foreground and mountains in the background.

An effective way to engage and empower communities is to give them the financial responsibility to develop projects that meet their local needs. The community managed climate grants scheme will give communities the power to co-design, fund and deliver projects that build resilience and mitigate climate impacts.

Since the National Park’s inception in 2003, the most successful community projects have been those in which local people are involved in making operational and financial decisions over which projects are taken forward.

The community managed climate grants scheme will give communities the power to define, design, fund and deliver projects that build resilience and mitigate climate impacts and link with other Cairngorms 2030 projects.

  • Lochan Mor at Rothiemurchus Forest.
  • Bee species on phacelia flower in arable field.

The project will test how to bring communities together to decide the criteria and to award the grants. Community groups and interest groups will be able to apply to the fund.

The co-design process will agree the decision making and funding award criteria to deliver Cairngorms 2030 outcomes. At least 10% of the grant scheme will be set aside for equality, diversity, and inclusion groups to meet the outcome of widening participation.
