East Cairngorms Moorland Partnership

A curlew flying over heather moorland at Mar estate.

The East Cairngorms Moorland Partnership is made up of the Cairngorms National Park Authority and six estates: Abergeldie, Balmoral, Glenavon, Glenlivet, Mar and Mar Lodge. Its members work together to contribute to the aims of the National Park through coordinated, responsible and sustainable moorland management.

The partnership is focused on restoring, managing and monitoring moorland habitats and species, while operating viable rural businesses and contributing to the green economy. Together, partner estates aim to achieve the following objectives.

  • A river running through moorland at Mar Estate.
  • Glenlivet landscape
  • Snipe on Mar Lodge Estate

    Actively restoring habitats

Partners are working on landscape-scale restoration plans to mitigate the effects of climate change and nature loss. These include rewetting and restoring peatlands and bogs, creating more natural river and wetland systems, and connecting and expanding native and riparian woodlands and scrub, especially on moorland edges and around woodland remnants.

Improving conservation status of key species

Moorlands are an important place for biodiversity, with internationally recognised habitats supporting plants, breeding birds and invertebrates. Conservation work will help protect species including waders, mountain hares, raptors, woolly willow and aspen.

    Gathering data and sharing evidence

Monitoring provides robust evidence and data to demonstrate the sustainability of land management practices, the biodiversity of moorlands, the conservation status of species and the delivery of other public benefits such as sequestered carbon and healthier upland rivers.

    Raising awareness of moorland management

Moorlands can be an overlooked habitat and engaging with the public to communicate their importance helps to raise their profile and publicise the work carried out by partner estates.
