Russell Jones is an independent councillor, elected in May 2022, representing Highland Council’s ward 20, Badenoch and Strathspey. A member of the Joint Administration Group he is vice chair of Highland Council’s South Area Planning Committee and serves on the Economy and Infrastructure Committee, Redesign Board and Audit and Scrutiny Committee.
Russell works in Kingussie as manager of a renewable energy electricity generation plant and has spent most of his working life in civil works and plant hire. Proud to have been brought up and to live in this area, Russell enjoys the benefits and opportunities of an outdoor lifestyle. A former shinty player and President of Kingussie Camanachd Club, he began skiing on Cairngorm in the 1970s and also ‘enjoys’ endurance cycling, having cycled coast to coast across the USA and from the Artic Circle to the south of Spain in recent years.

The new fire byelaw
How the Cairngorms National Park Authority and its partners are tackling the threat of wildfires, including details on the recreational fire management byelaw, in place from 1 April to 30 September each year.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has issued a wildfire warning impacting areas of the National Park on Friday 29 May until Monday 1 June. If you are out and about in the Cairngorms National Park please observe the following guidance:
- Do not light any fire or barbecue, in line with the new fire byelaw
- Always ensure cigarettes are fully extinguished and take your litter (including glass) away with you
- Enjoy the outdoors responsibly - most wildfires are caused by human activity
- Stay alert - with dry vegetation and warm weather, fires can start easily, spread rapidly, and burn intensely
- If you see a wildfire, dial 999
