Wellbeing economy

Looking down at Uath Lochans from Farleitter Crag

Exploring a wellbeing economy means thinking beyond traditional measures that we’re used to hearing about, like gross domestic product, and considering what an economy that serves the wellbeing of people and the planet could look like.

This project is developing ways of measuring and tracking the overall wellbeing of the Cairngorms National Park in a broad sense, as part of the Wellbeing Economy Action Plan and in line with the broader Scottish Government policy direction.

  • Three people standing in Corrie Fee admiring the view.
  • A person pays with cash at a coffee shop in the Cairngorms National Park.

By looking at the factors that contribute to the area being healthy and resilient - including the natural and cultural qualities - and finding tangible ways of identifying and measuring these, this project is providing a way for us to follow how this changes over time.

These indicators, focussing on community, health, transport, business and skills, will form the baseline to record and monitor the progress towards a wellbeing economy.
