John Kirk was directly elected to represent electoral ward three of the Cairngorms National Park, covering Highland. Communities in this ward include Carrbridge, Cromdale, Grantown-on-Spey and Nethy Bridge.
John farms 750 hectares at Nethy Bridge with his wife Anne. They run an agricultural and plant hire business and a builders' merchants with shops in Aviemore employing 30 people so he is aware of the pressures businesses face in the area. John enjoys playing bowls to relax and is Chairman of the Nethy Newspaper. John served on the National Farmers Union (NFU) and is currently Showground Convener of Strathspey Farmers Club which is one of the Cairngorms National Park’s biggest one-day events. John loves the area, and would love to see the wildlife improved for future generations. In his spare time, he is involved in local fundraising for defibrillators and Christmas lights.

The new fire byelaw
How the Cairngorms National Park Authority and its partners are tackling the threat of wildfires, including details on the recreational fire management byelaw, in place from 1 April to 30 September each year.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has issued a wildfire warning impacting areas of the National Park on Friday 29 May until Monday 1 June. If you are out and about in the Cairngorms National Park please observe the following guidance:
- Do not light any fire or barbecue, in line with the new fire byelaw
- Always ensure cigarettes are fully extinguished and take your litter (including glass) away with you
- Enjoy the outdoors responsibly - most wildfires are caused by human activity
- Stay alert - with dry vegetation and warm weather, fires can start easily, spread rapidly, and burn intensely
- If you see a wildfire, dial 999
