Integrated Wildfire Management Plan

The Integrated Wildfire Management Plan aims to provide support and guidance for land managers in the National Park to reduce the risk of fires, be better prepared to tackle wildfires and to make the landscape more resilient.

Wildfires can be devastating to nature, communities and businesses. It is essential that we minimise the chances of wildfires starting and respond effectively to those that do. Land managers have been working to reduce wildfire risk in the National Park for many years and there is a wealth of expertise and past events to learn from. This plan draws on that experience and provides guidance, actions and best practice for landowners and public bodies with regard to wildfire.

In addition to the plan our Climate Adaptation Fund has awarded money for fire-fighting equipment and training on land in the Cairngorms, providing the practical tools and skills necessary to respond to the increasing risk of wildfires in the National Park.

This Integrated Wildfire Management Plan has recommendations and actions that are designed to increase the ability of land managers to:

  • Reduce the risk of wildfires starting
  • Prepare for and respond effectively to wildfires that do start; and
  • Mitigate impacts of wildfires in the landscape.

The plan also covers what needs to be considered in a live situation, advising on communications and co-ordination.

Intended to be a document that can be adapted as new events occur and priorities evolve, the plan will be reviewed annually with input from the Cairngorms Upland Advisory Group.
