Ranger services

Our rangers and partner ranger services work across the Cairngorms National Park, encouraging people to have a safe, enjoyable and responsible visit.
Cairngorms National Park ranger team
We have a dynamic ranger team that inspires residents and visitors to connect with, protect and respect the nature and landscapes of this special place.
Skilled in the delivery of engagement activities for families, local communities and special interest groups, our team covers the National Park in three teams - Badenoch and Strathspey, Deeside and the Angus Glens.
We work in partnership with other site-based ranger services and land managers across the National Park, at key visitor hotspots including car parks, trail heads, roadside locations, countryside attractions and viewpoints.
Countryside rangers
Our team of skilled and experienced countryside rangers work on a variety of projects and activities that promote the understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of the Cairngorms and help to create a National Park for all.
Seasonal rangers
From April to October our seasonal rangers work with our countryside rangers and partners to welcome visitors at our key visitor hotspots. Together they promote responsible access by sharing knowledge and advice on their patrols throughout the Cairngorms, and supporting our engagement activities. Our seasonal rangers play a vital role in helping protect this special place and ensuring current and future generations can continue to enjoy our nature and landscapes.
Trainee rangers
We run an annual trainee ranger programme from June to September, allowing individuals to learn key engagement skills and promote the Scottish Outdoor Access Code by shadowing our wider ranger team throughout the peak visitor season.

The family of ranger services
14 ranger services operate across the National Park forming the family of ranger services. These teams work in partnership to connect people to the nature and landscapes of the Cairngorms in a caring and responsible way.

The family of ranger services work together to provide engagement activities to local communities, schools and outreach groups in the Cairngorms National Park. Collectively, they enable the development of the ranger profession in the area, through partnership working, training and development opportunities.
Rangers in the National Park are employed by a variety of organisations including local authorities, private estates and charitable trusts. Their work is paid for by their employer supported by grant aid and direct contributions from the public through donations, event charges, sale of guides and car park charges.
