My dream summer as a National Park trainee ranger

The programme is set up for people new to the job, whether that’s school leavers or someone like me, looking for a change in career. I wanted to work in the outdoors, welcoming people and encouraging them to connect with nature in a responsible way. The trainee ranger programme has been engaging, exciting and extensive from start to finish, and I have seen my skill set and knowledge flourish. The support and guidance given throughout the programme has been outstanding and it has been so beneficial to be surrounded by inspiring and knowledgeable people.
I’ve a summer of incredible memories, but I think my favourite day would have to be the day spent with Jonathan [Willet] from the beaver team. We chatted all things beavers: everything including folklore, mythology, diet, reintroduction, behaviour, history, anatomy and how they were hunted close to extinction for their pelts. We then visited various sites to see their lodges and dams, identifying signs of beaver activity and discussing the impact they’ve made on their environment. The day was enthralling from start to finish.
Since arriving on the job there has not been a day where I have woken up and not been blown away by the place and the nature; from the lochs to the mountains, the National Park really has it all. And of course, the people. Everyone I have come across seems to have a great appreciation of - and passion for - protecting our beautiful and varied landscapes and local communities.
If I had to offer a piece of advice to someone considering applying to a trainee ranger in the Cairngorms, I’d say you absolutely won't regret it. If you are passionate about people, place and nature, have a curious mind and an enthusiastic personality, then this would be a great fit for you. And if you desire to be in a career where developing your knowledge and skillset knows no bounds then stepping into the ranger profession would be a wonderful option; the trainee ranger programme is the perfect starting point.
