Tomintoul and Glenlivet Landscape Partnership

A view along a path in the village green with the Tomintoul village shop and a hotel in the background

The area of Tomintoul and Glenlivet in the north east corner of the Cairngorms National Park has a rich history, shaped by its remote location and living, working landscape. The Tomintoul and Glenlivet Landscape Partnership was created to help regenerate the area through celebrating this rich heritage, enhancing the natural environment and developing skills and opportunities.

A number of historic sites tell the story of the cultural heritage of Tomintoul and Glenlivet. Two examples of these are Scalan, a former Roman Catholic seminary and Blairfindy Castle.

Scalan in the Braes of Glenlivet - the site of a former Roman Catholic seminary where priests were trained during the 1700s when Catholicism was banned. It then reverted to a farm, including two steading buildings that housed corn threshing mills. Recent conservation works have restored one of the water wheels and mill lade, highlighting the wealth of historic graffiti on the walls which tell the story of farming life in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Blairfindy Castle is a 16th century ruin at Castletown, Glenlivet. Following a major project to conserve and stabilise the structure, this scheduled monument is now accessible to visitors.

Many archaeological remains of old settlements and historic places around Tomintoul and Glenlivet have been discovered by local volunteers and recorded in a booklet, Community Cultural Heritage.

Hundreds of historic images and oral recordings of life and work in Tomintoul and Glenlivet are available online at the Tomintoul and Glenlivet digital archive.

The Tomintoul and Glenlivet Discovery Centre is community owned and managed, providing visitor information and exhibits on local history, heritage and dark skies including virtual reality experiences.
