Health walks

A group of walkers on the Grantown-on-Spey health walk surrounded by trees.

Health walks are short, safe, social, local, low-level walks with a trained leader to show you the way. They are free and take place each week across the Cairngorms. They last from 10 minutes up to an hour depending on how everyone is feeling and are open to everyone. They are particularly great for those who would like to become more active or who would like to walk to feel better or meet new people.

Why walk?

Walking is brilliant for your health! Walking can help to prevent a range of health conditions including heart disease, stroke, type two diabetes, obesity, some cancers and Alzheimer’s. It can help reduce falls in older adults, help you sleep better, help to manage pain and a wide range of long-term conditions. It’s been proven to have a positive effect on our mental health too, especially if we get into green spaces to do it. Walking can increase feelings of self-esteem, improve mood, and reduce anxiety and depression, and walking in a group is a brilliant way to meet new people. It’s accessible, you don’t need any special equipment and it’s free!

    Join us

There are 14 health walks taking place each week across the Cairngorms National Park, part of a network of over 700 taking place across Scotland coordinated by Paths for All. You can find a map below with all the information you need about meeting day and location. There’s no need to book, just come along on the day!

Could you volunteer as a health walk leader?

Did you know that almost all our health walks are led by volunteers? If you love to walk and talk this is the role for you!

As a health walk leader you would join the team of volunteers across the National Park that lead your local health walk and take turns helping plan or lead walks, welcome walkers to the group, or simply be a friendly face other walkers can chat with. You don’t need to help every week, the role is very flexible.

We support you with a short and informal training session and ongoing opportunities to develop your skills.
