Affordable homes on the cards for Boat of Garten

24th September 2021

The Cairngorms National Park Authority Planning Committee has given the go ahead, in principle, for four new homes in the village of Boat of Garten. Two properties will be affordable units alongside two self-build plots to be marketed locally.

The application from The Community Housing Trust was welcomed by members who acknowledged the role of the Boat of Garten community and the local estate in bringing this project forward.

The four property development, just off Deshar Court, is in an area of woodland but still central to the village and local amenities.

Addressing the Committee members, CNPA Planning Manager Emma Bryce said: “Boat of Garten is a thriving community, however, given the environmental constraints, no new housing allocations have been identified in the village – but we know there is a need for small scale housing opportunities. Despite being out with the settlement boundary, this proposed development is supported by our policies that promote the delivery of affordable housing.”

Planning Committee Convener Dr Gaener Rodger said: “Affordable housing is an issue in many Park communities and to deliver it, often takes a creative approach. I am delighted to see The Community Housing Trust working with the local estate – and listening to the needs of the community – and acting accordingly. I look forward to seeing their detailed proposals when they are submitted.”

Plans for a formal car park in a remote location near Blair Atholl were also approved at this morning’s online meeting. The Scottish Outdoor Access Trust submitted an application for the development at the end of the Fenderbridge road, which will provide improved parking facilities for walkers accessing Beinn a’Ghlo.
