Guidance on assessing effects on Special Landscape Qualities

Draft technical guidance on the Assessment of Effects on Special Landscape Qualities (AESLQ) has been prepared jointly by the Cairngorms National Park Authority, NatureScot and the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park Authority. It applies to Special Landscape Qualities identified for designated National Scenic Areas and National Parks in Scotland. These are highly valued areas that represent the country’s finest landscapes, and the importance of their Special Landscape Qualities is reflected in national policy.

Consultation Period: 30 May 2024 - 11 July 2024

This guidance has been prepared primarily to assist those involved in developing and managing landscapes by:

  1. Describing the sequence of steps to follow when carrying out an Assessment of Effects on Special Landscape Qualities
  2. Demonstrating how considering Special Landscape Qualities can benefit the siting and design of a proposal
  3. Explaining why and how this information is required to inform judgements on effects in relation to planning and land use policies, ensuring transparency

We are seeking views on this draft technical guidance, particularly around its usability and the depth of information.

The consultation documents are in two formats to allow full consideration of the draft AESLQ Guidance.
