Public Perception Survey of Wildness in Scotland

This study was undertaken to assist both Scottish National Park Authorities refine their wildness mapping. It examines what the Scottish public undertands by, and how it values, wildness in Scotland’s landscape. It considers the four key factors that contribute to a sense of wildness – naturalness of the land cover and wildlife; presence of man-made structure and features; remoteness from roads and railway stations; terrain. The results provide an appropriate weighting for each when combined in the wildness map.
