The Cairngorms Moorlands Project is boasting a brand new logo thanks to the design efforts of a primary school pupil from Moray.
Rhiannon Calder (P6) from Inveravon Primary School took top honours with her eye-catching logo, which features a pair of grouse. Local Cairngorms National Park Authority Board Member, Eleanor Mackintosh presented Rhiannon with her prize of a £30.00 book token last week.
Nadia Jamieson (P5) from Northmuir Primary School in Angus won second prize and was presented with her £20.00 book token by Moorlands Project Liaison Officer, Gail Renwick. Meanwhile, third prize went to Rhiannon’s classmate at Inveravon Primary, Scott Forsyth (P7), who was awarded a book token worth £10.00.
Presenting the prizes at Inveravon Primary School, Eleanor Mackintosh said: “All three winning designs are excellent and they all demonstrate the knowledge and understanding that these young people have with regards to one of the Cairngorms most valuable habitats.”
Rhiannon’s winning design will now be used to promote the Cairngorms Moorlands project and will feature on promotional material such as pencils, rulers and so on.
The Cairngorms Moorlands project has been up and running since July 2003 but – until now – had been lacking its own logo! The project aims to raise awareness of the importance of moorlands in and around the Cairngorms National Park, and the part that people play in maintaining these valuable habitats.
There are two demonstration moors in the Cairngorms National Park – Blairfindy Moor near Tomintoul on the Glenlivet Estate and Balnaboth Moor in Glen Prosen. Both are used to demonstrate best practice in moorland management and are an educational resource where groups of any age can take part in guided walks and other activities to learn more about moorlands.
The Cairngorms Moorlands project is hosted by the Cairngorms National Park Authority (CNPA) but a variety of other organisations are involved including Scottish Natural Heritage, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation, the Heather Trust and the Game Conservancy Trust.
